Merab is our featured amazing Everyday Changemaker. She not only owns one of the women owned businesses in Uganda, but more importantly she cares tremendously about the welfare of the members of her community especially the elderly and children. She donates many handmade articles of clothing (also designed by her), food and supplies to them. Impacting her community and being a beacon of light is one of the major reasons Merab was awarded the status of an “Everyday Changemaker”. She is held in high esteem in her community and has organically developed into the role of a proximate leader and a community builder (which is innate by nature) whose input is helping change the ecosystem of Kisoro, a farming region in Uganda.
Merab was also chosen as one of our “Everyday Changemakers” because she personally trains many young people in her region, in her profession of tailoring and sewing. She personally uplifts the youth so they can create their livelihood and be a contributing member of their community. She envisions creating a much-needed training center in the not-so-distant future.
Not only is Merab an everyday changemaker, but she is also one of our bright spots in the Community Independence Initiative’s support of a new emerging field of social change, peer driven change. Her woman owned retail shop, T & M Duty Shop is a role model for women — that they too can succeed, that they too can own a business and be a powerful voice in their community.
